SWAT Agronomy Insights with John D. Jones
Crop nutrient removal with harvest is often the largest mechanism for nutrient export from crop fields. Accurate and precise removal estimates are necessary for determining fertilizer rates, maintaining optimum soil-test levels and nutrient budgeting.
During this webinar, Dr. Jones will present recent work examining management effects on grain nutrient concentrations and removal rates for corn and soybean. Specifically, how nutrient removal at high yield levels affects fertilization decisions.
Dr. John Jones is a Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management Researcher & Lecturer in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Jones’ research focuses on measuring and managing soil nutrients for agronomic and water quality benefits through soil-test calibration, identifying in what forms nutrients exist in soil and water, and improving nutrient recommendations. He is an alumnus of Kansas State (BSc.) and Iowa State (MSc. & Ph.D.) Universities. John and his family live on their farm near Columbus, WI.

SWAT Agronomy Insights with Jordon Wade
Carbon cycling in soil is a complex, but important topic. At SWAT MAPS, our fundamental goal is to understand the influences of soil, water, and topography on in-field variability and utilization of soil-applied nutrients. How might soil pH and texture affect carbon use efficiency and other nutrients such as nitrogen or phosphorus? How does fertilizer, crop residue, or other soil amendments help build soil organic carbon and what might be happening from zone to zone to those inputs?
Jordon Wade, assistant professor of soil health and fertility at the University of Missouri will join us for the next Agronomy Insights webinar on March 8, at 9:00 am CST. Much of Jordon’s work focuses on on-farm trials and decision support tools for farmers. He has experience in nutrient management and developing soil health indicators and is also the Director of the University of Missouri’s Soil Health Assessment.
