ServiTech on Turning Data into ROI and Why Growers Trust Their Prescriptive Approach

For more than 50 years, ServiTech has focused on helping growers make smarter agronomic decisions through data, technology, and trusted relationships. What began in southwest Kansas to provide producers with better access to agronomic insight has evolved into one of the largest agronomy and laboratory networks in the United States, with a continued focus on helping farmers improve efficiency, profitability, and long-term sustainability. That same mindset is what led ServiTech to bring SWAT MAPS into their service offerings.

As precision agriculture has evolved, so have the expectations around data. Growers today are not just looking for maps or imagery. They want information that reflects what is actually happening in their fields and helps them make confident decisions.

“Customers look at these maps and they feel they represent their fields better than other straight yield or NDVI or satellite-based maps,” says Nate Benson, Senior Agronomist at ServiTech. “When they look at it and they say ‘if I could draw a picture of my field, this is how I’d draw it.’ It’s a lot of validity and comfort.”

That level of confidence has helped open the door to more precise management decisions across a wide range of operations. By combining SWAT MAPS data with soil samples, yield information, and years of field history, ServiTech has been able to help growers move beyond simply collecting data and starting to use it more effectively.

The focus is increasingly centered around return on investment. Rather than applying the same strategy across an entire field, ServiTech is helping growers manage variability with greater precision, making decisions based on field potential, soil characteristics, and long-term productivity.

The team describes it as being more prescriptive about things. In the end, it’s all ROI driven.

“VR in soybeans based on the zones has shown good response,” Nate explained. “We’ve been able to identify areas to apply the right rates and seed inputs as well as providing returns on yield. With corn, if you can find those areas that are low productivity and save seed in those areas, it may be small amounts but over a big operation it can add up to substantial dollars.”

As input costs continue to rise and commodity prices remain unpredictable, ServiTech sees precision agriculture becoming less about maximizing yield alone and more about maximizing efficiency.

“I see it from a standpoint of utilizing what you have and looking more at ROI,” says Tanner Lawton, Sales Associate with ServiTech. “It’s not saying ‘I did this in the past and it worked,’ or ‘I read this in an article so I’m going to do that,’ you’re using your actual data to grow that 300 bushels. It may cost you more money, but it also may cost you less money because you’re being prescriptive about it.”

ServiTech believes the value of agronomy comes from helping growers make informed decisions that fit their operation, not from pushing products or following trends. By integrating tools like SWAT MAPS into their broader agronomic strategy, they continue to strengthen their ability to provide recommendations rooted in real field variability and practical outcomes. The result is a more collaborative approach where growers can feel confident the decisions being made are based on science, experience, and the realities of their operation.

When asked about a recent accomplishment worth highlighting, Lawton pointed to ServiTech’s ongoing commitment to community involvement, including its partnership with the Iowa Governor Charity Steer Show in support of the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa.

“We don’t just go to an area to work with customers,” Lawton said. “We go to an area to grow community relationships to show that ServiTech truly cares about their community. We want to support the people who support us.”

Fifteen Years in the Field: Six Strong Ag and the Power of SWAT MAPS

Based in Marwayne, Alberta, Six Strong Ag has spent the past 15 years building a consulting business rooted in hands on agronomy and long-term relationships. Early in the journey, benchmark soil sampling provided valuable insight, but as more data became available, it also exposed a growing limitation.

“We were calling a sandy hilltop the same thing as a low alkaline spot because they weren’t producing anything,” explains Owner Darcy Saskiw. “But they’re not the same, and we can’t treat them the same.”

That shift in thinking set Six Strong Ag on a path toward zone-based management and eventually toward SWAT MAPS. What stood out was the ability to tie agronomic decisions back to real field variability, rather than relying on surface level indicators that did not always tell the full story. Adopting SWAT MAPS allowed Six Strong Ag to bring variable rate management into their consulting work in a way that felt practical and defensible. It also helped bridge the gap between what farmers were seeing in the field and what the data was actually saying.

As with any new approach, hesitation was common in the early stages. Conversations often started with questions around cost and whether the technology would truly deliver value. Over time, those concerns began to fade.

“For the first couple of years, almost every customer was hesitant,” they say. “But once they used it for a season and saw the benefits, their perspective changed.”

Those benefits were not always measured in yield alone. Many growers noticed more even crops, reduced fertilizer and seed use, and smoother harvests. Yield improvements often followed, but the confidence came from seeing fields perform more consistently across zones. Some of the most impactful insights came from digging deeper into soil data. Variability in nutrients like calcium stood out, revealing opportunities that had previously gone unnoticed.

“In one field we varied calcium anywhere from a half ton per acre to four tons per acre,” Saskiw explained. “It didn’t show up right away, but within a couple of years it went from a poor producing field to one of their better ones.”

Salinity management also became more targeted. Instead of continuing to fertilize areas that could not respond, growers adjusted seeding and input strategies based on zone potential. With increasingly precise equipment, those decisions could be made at a much smaller scale, allowing problem areas to be addressed without compromising the rest of the field.

Looking ahead, Six Strong Ag sees precision agriculture continuing to evolve as more data sources come together. Improved harvest maps, imagery, AI driven tools, and tools like SWAT CAM are creating new opportunities to refine management strategies.

“Once we start integrating all that data together, we can keep getting better at how we build and manage zones,” Saskiw noted. “That’s where the future really is.”

Despite the technology, Six Strong Ag believes its biggest differentiator remains its hands on approach. The people making recommendations are the same people out in the field, season after season.

“We’re a small company and we’re very hands on. It’s actually us doing the work, not hired help, and our customers see value in that.”

That consistency has helped build strong relationships and long-term trust, even as the business continues to grow. Expanding SWAT managed acres remains a priority, along with exploring new services such as compaction testing and mapping to meet growing farmer interest.

Fall 2025 marked an important milestone as Six Strong Ag celebrated 15 years in business. Over that time, the impact of SWAT MAPS has become increasingly clear.

“One grower returned 20 bags of canola seed at the end of the year,” said Saskiw. “That alone paid for half of SWAT, and that’s before you look at fertilizer savings or other crops.”

For Six Strong Ag, the partnership with SWAT MAPS reflects a shared commitment to continuous improvement. Both are focused on adapting, refining, and finding better ways to help farmers succeed.

Moving Ahead of the Agronomy Curve with Premium SWAT MAPS Partner, P.T. Sullivan Agro Inc.

What started as Paul T. Sullivan’s independent agronomy business in 1996 has grown to become a team of six full-time staff who serve farmers in the Ottawa Valley in Eastern Ontario. Now nearly 30 years in business, P.T. Sullivan Agro brings advanced tech and field knowledge to farmers looking to manage productivity, profitability and managing impacts of weather variability.

“We have a skilled team who can anticipate changes or threats in the field. We provide advice that helps farmers to get the most out of what they’re putting into their crop,” says Sullivan. Return on investment is the goal.

Offering a wide range of services such as pre-season crop planning, in-season crop management, on-farm research and plot work, P.T. Sullivan Agro places value on one-on-one relationships with farmers and provides on-farm consultations. With in-field assessment of soil conditions, crop staging and root development, the team prides themselves on authenticity in observations and advice. By developing a crop rotation, and unique hybrid selection, fertility and pest management program by field, they set up the season for best management approaches and outcomes.

“Scouting has been a big part of our business. Our staff, including summer interns, spend time in field monitoring crop development, soil sampling, and taking plant tissue for analysis,” says Sullivan. “In Ontario, farmers appreciate in-season information. We have found that a systems approach of soil and topography-based sampling and mapping provides timely data. With data in-hand, growers can see the value in precision ag practices like variable rate applications”

A key agronomy offering is the use of the SWAT ECOSYSTEM, which brings comprehensive understanding to what’s happening in the field - the soil, water availability and field topography. Sullivan says integrating SWAT MAPS into their agronomy work bring what growers may be seeing in the field into maps and data that can provide the basis for better management of crop inputs.

“We use these SWAT concepts to categorize low spots or water collecting areas, shoulder slopes, upper slopes, and so on. We have SWAT MAPS embedded into our scouting platform so that we can easily scout fields based on SWAT zones. We use SWAT information in everything we manage in the field. It becomes a very powerful tool to have at our fingertips.”

Sullivan Agro began pursuing corn hybrid evaluation trials to observe the impact of stress on yield components in corn development time periods in 2019. Understanding important yield factors such as kernels per acre, kernel mass (perhaps both simultaneously), and overlaying that information onto a SWAT MAP allows them to create planting prescriptions to increase or decrease populations according to probability of moisture availability. Similar work in soft winter wheat is also underway.

“We can now anticipate where those differences will be in the field. Understanding corn hybrid characteristics offers a perspective like never before and pulls everything together in a way so we can act on variable rate seeding and fertility, as well as fungicide applications based on the soil textures and water holding capacities. These are agronomy concepts that we are building upon with SWAT maps.”

Hawk’s Agro on Strengthening Farmer Relationships, Changing Mindsets Around VR, and Finding Early Wins with SWAT MAPS

Since joining the SWAT MAPS partner network in 2023, Hawk’s Agro has continued to strengthen its commitment to helping farmers reach their goals through local expertise and advanced agronomic tools. Founded in 2009, the company has grown steadily and now operates seven locations across Saskatchewan in Central Butte, Gravelbourg, Neville, Moose Jaw, Rouleau, Strongfield, and Swift Current. Each location is filled with a team dedicated to delivering products, service, and insights that help farmers make confident decisions.

Hawk’s Agro has always taken pride in knowing its customers’ operations as well as they do. For Mackenzie Seidle, Precision Agronomy Lead, SWAT MAPS fits naturally into that philosophy.

“Providing SWAT MAPS as a tool to help farmers plan for successful futures has allowed customers to understand their operations on a deeper level, which means we can serve them even better,” Mackenzie explains.

Over the past two years, the team has seen how SWAT MAPS can change grower perceptions about variable rate technology. Some farmers were initially hesitant, especially those who had tried NDVI-based VR maps in the past with mixed results. By using SWAT MAPS, Hawk’s Agro has been able to show producers firsthand how accurate zone mapping can reveal true variability within a field and how that insight translates into improved efficiency and yield potential. The impact has been especially clear in irrigation acres.

“Farmers often see a return on their investment within the first year and are quick to expand to more acres after seeing the results,” says Mackenzie.

Precision agriculture has become a core focus area for Hawk’s Agro. The company has built a team dedicated solely to supporting variable rate and agronomic decision making, allowing for specialized attention and expertise. Mackenzie believes this structure helps ensure that growers receive guidance rooted in data rather than broad assumptions.

“Agronomy is such a broad field, and one person cannot specialize in everything,” she says. “Having designated staff focused on specific areas allows us to bring specialized knowledge directly to our growers. I truly believe that we have some of the best people working in our company to help customers reach their goals.”

Hawk’s Agro continues to learn, grow, and advocate for the benefits of understanding the soil from the ground up. The team is also expanding its network, recently partnering with AgroPlus in Alberta to share knowledge and strengthen irrigation management support in their region.

Looking ahead, Mackenzie sees precision agriculture as an area with enormous potential.

“Since healthy soil is the root of a productive crop, it makes sense to start there and manage each zone to the best of our ability.”

With a passionate team, strong grower relationships, and a clear commitment to innovation, Hawk’s Agro is proving that the future of precision agronomy in Saskatchewan is built on understanding what lies beneath the surface. A Comprehensive Approach to Agronomy: Moose Jaw Co-op

With a diversified operation and a comprehensive approach to agronomic services, Moose Jaw Co-op excels in delivering tailored solutions for farmers’ success thanks to its highly skilled Crop Input Team.

The team, based throughout south-central Saskatchewan, has been riding high over the past few years, from first becoming a SWAT MAPS service provider in 2019, to opening doors on a new agronomy centre in 2022, to adding a fertilizer floater to their line of equipment in 2023, and being recognized by the SIA with an AGEX award in 2025. Despite their success, they continue to prioritize reliability and trustworthiness in every interaction with farmers.

“Our attention to detail is what sets us apart,” says Agronomy Manager, Troy McInnis. “The team always takes the time to explain processes and include farmers in detailed management factors. Our growers have invested a lot of time working with our agronomists and we really appreciate it. This investment in time has allowed us to better understand their farm, and more importantly makes us better at our job.”

The tailored guidance provided by the team stems from their extensive range of agronomy tools, including crop planning and scouting, product selection and delivery, seed treatments, fertilizer, and precision ag services including SWAT MAPS. McInnis explained how with SWAT MAPS, agronomists gain a clear understanding of a farmer’s soil resource, which allows them to enhance their expertise through providing recommendations specific to a grower and their field.

“SWAT MAPS aligns with our business philosophy of benefitting the customer and our ability to serve the customer. It provides a common sense approach for us and allows for a close working relationship between growers and agronomists, which benefits our retail business and agronomy at the farm level.”

The Crop Input Team has found SWAT MAPS to be especially useful in areas of managing salinity and plant populations, based on grower feedback.

“In saline areas, increased seeding rates have helped establish more plants to compete with weeds and in some instances, improve yields, especially in the slightly saline soil surrounding the ‘bad stuff’,” McInnis explained. “Also, it’s always a good feeling to dial back the fertilizer expenses in saline areas of a field where yields are lower.”

Other valuable insights emerged from working with lentils.

“When I started working with SWAT MAPS, I had the ‘fertilizer blinders’ on and discounted the benefit of using SWAT MAPS with pulse crops. After a few seasons working with SWAT MAPS in our more rolling landscapes, I realized that managing our lentil stands through variable rate seeding provided a lot of value.”

Looking ahead, the team at Moose Jaw Co-op aims to grow their business in one simple way: by adding value to their farmers’ operations. They will continue to enhance their expertise in precision agronomy by focusing on variable rate seed and fertilizer recommendations, and use this knowledge to further guide decisions on variable rate fungicides. As a co-operative, the team also continually invests heavily into their community through both patronage paid out to members along with donations and support for community events, organizations and projects.
